He traveled extensively in search of new opportunities, living in multiple cities such as New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Richmond. He placed a few stories with a Philadelphia publication and began work on his only drama Politian. He began to publish more short stories and in landed an editorial position with the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond.
